Brief Introduction to Jiangsu Province and its Cooperation with the United States

Jiangsu is located at the eastern coast of China, in the prosperous Yangtze River Delta, with a land area of 102,600 km2 and a population of more than 79.4 million. Nanjing is the provincial capital. Jiangsu is one of the best economies in China. In 2013, the GDP of Jiangsu totaled RMB 5.9 trillion; the total consumer sales reached a record high of over RMB 2.07 trillion; the paid-in foreign investment exceeded USD 33.2 billion; the import and export volume reached about USD 550.8 billion. Jiangsu has been holding the first place in China in FDI utilization and the second place in import and export for 11 consecutive years. By the end of 2013, over 3,417 oversea projects have been invested by Jiangsu enterprises, together with a contract investment of about USD 19.8 billion from Jiangsu.

In 2013, the import and export volume between Jiangsu and United States amounted to USD 81.99 billion. By the end of 2013, over 10,920 projects have been invested by American enterprises in Jiangsu with a paid-in investment of USD 15.03 billion; 528 projects have been invested in the United States by Jiangsu enterprises, with a contract investment of USD 1.73 billion, of which 1/4 is invested in California. 

Jiangsu has set up friendly province-state relationship with State of New York in 1989, and with State of California in 2011. In 2012, The Joint Economic Committee between California State and Jiangsu Province was set up; in 2013, Jiangsu became a member of China Provinces and US California Joint Working Group on Trade and Investment Cooperation; “Memorandum of Understanding on Friendly Cooperation between California and Jiangsu” was inked in the same year.

Department of Commerce of Jiangsu Province is a functional department of the provincial government, executing administration of domestic and foreign trade, and international economic cooperation. We have set up two representative offices in the US, one in State of New York, the other in State of California. These offices provide services to the promotion of economic cooperation between Jiangsu and the United States.
