Brief Introduction to Guangdong Province and its Cooperation with the United States

Guangdong Province is located in the southernmost part of the mainland China, and it is the center of the economic circle of South China and East-South Asia. The geographical area of the province is 1798 hundred square-kilometers with the permanent population of 0.106 billion which earns Guangdong the name of the largest population province. 

Guangdong has already become one of regions in China with the robustest economic force, the most dynamic and open economy. In 2013, Guangdong’s GDP reached RMB 6.216397 trillion, which accounted for 10.9% of the national total and has been ranking No.1 of the whole country for 25 consecutive years; the province’s total retail sales value of social consumer goods reached RMB 2.54539 trillion, accounting for 10.7% of the national total and has been ranking No.1 of the whole country for 31 consecutive years; the total import and export value reached US$ 1.09157 trillion, and the annual total import and export value exceeded US$ 1 trillion for the first time, which accounted for 1/4 of the national total and has been ranking No.1 of the whole country for 28 consecutive years. By far, more than 170,000 foreign invested enterprises have been approved to be established in Guangdong, and Guangdong's enterprises have extended their foreign investments and cooperations to over 100 countries and regions in the world. 

Guangdong owns a complete industrial system and world-class production, processing and matching capability. Currently, 9 pillar industries of electronic information, electrical machinery, petrochemical, textile and garment, food and beverage, construction material, papermaking, pharmacy and automobile have been established, shipbuilding, rail transport equipment, nuclear power equipment, wind power equipment, general airplane and other advanced manufacturing industries are under rapid developments, which form the advanced manufacturing industrial system covering sea, land and air. Modern service industries are growing gloriously, and large-scale international exhibitions such as China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair), China Hi-tech Fair and China International Small & Medium Enterprises Fair are famous both at home and abroad. During the Twelfth- Five-Year Plan period, Guangdong will emphasize cultivation and development of strategic emerging industries such as high-end & new-type electronic information, new-energy vehicle, LED lighting, biology, high-end equipment manufacturing, energy saving & environmental protection, new energies and new materials.    

In 2013, the imports and exports between Guangdong and the US reached about US$120 billion with 8.7% increase, accounting for 11% of the foreign trade in Guangdong and 22.8% of the Sino-US foreign trade. By the end of April 2014, the accumulated FDI approved by the province has amounted to 4673 projects with contractual value figure registered as US$11.556 billion. In the future, Guangdong Province would promote the cooperations with the US and California in advanced manufacturing industry, modern service industry and hi-tech industry and encourage the enterprises from the above-mentioned industries to invest in Guangdong. Guangdong also encourages the Guagdong enterprises to cooperate with the counterparts in California to conduct in-depth cooperations in bio-medicine, electronics, modern agriculture and modern industry such as software, information telecommunication, finance, logistics and culture creation, by which means can promote the Guangdong enterprises with capital advantages to jointly cooperate and invest with the companies in the US and California which enjoy the advantages in technology and service.
